You can't have a modded ranked server, well you could but you would need access to the server files which the server provider is not supposed to give you, if you did mangae to mod it, it will get shut down pretty quick.
You can have a modded unranked server but it's pretty hard to get a ranked server populated let alone unranked.
BF2 has 6 times more players than 2142 and 5 times more servers, but less servers could mean it's easier to get your's populated, some rental servers come with multiple games loaded on them so you can siwtch games.
