You need to update to the latest version and play online on ranked servers to rank up and get awards, unlocks, etc.
The latest version is 1.50, but you need to install patch 1.41 first.

Ive never had that problem, but you can go on EAhelp.com and look for an answer. They have answers for EVERTHING Battlefield 2.
